Sleep Tight!

We are kicking off our curriculum theme "Sleep Tight" next week where we will be talking about bedtime routines and things we see in the night sky!  In the next few weeks, visit with your child about bedtime and sleep.  Talk to them about dreams they may have had and then ask open ended questions about the dreams!  Dreams can be very realistic for children.  Explore your child's feelings associated with dreams and be ready to clear up any misconceptions!
Sleep is one of life's necessities, yet many of us neglect its importance.  We try to function without the recommended eight hours each night and children require far more!  Toddlers and preschoolers should get 11-14 hours of sleep in 24 hour period.  Unfortunately, sleep problems are a common parenting challenge!  Set the stage for a lifelong healthy sleep habits early in life!  Consider the following suggestions:
  • Develop a consistent, calming bedtime routine and follow it every day of the week.
  • Address fears and calm anxieties. As children get older, the things they imagine become more elaborate.
  • Avoid "sleep stealers" such as TV, caffeine, excess weight and daily schedule that are too busy and make it difficult to wind down.
Sleep challenges may come and go as your child passes through various development stages and they will likely change as they go.  Just remember, quality sleep is important to the whole family!
